This redefines food. If you don't get a farm in early, and follow this advice, you will die. Savvy?
Step 1: Survive
Lesson number 1: Don't jump. Ever.
Lesson number 2: Don't swing your sword unless you must.
Follow these rules religiously until you have a farm. A big farm. Preferably automated.
So if you don't jump...how do you get around? Stairs. Lots of stairs.
Later on, food won't be as big of a deal, but to start you don't want to waste any at all.
Priority 1: get lots of seeds as you find a good place to settle
Priority 2: torches. a) you don't want to fight mobs yet. b) you want your crops growing 24/7. Crops take a bit longer to grow with our pack.
So once you find a nice lake/coast/river, set up a big farm. Light it up with torches. And plant all your crops on that tilled farmland. (Well, except rice. Plant rice on the water)
Don't kill skeletons for the bonemeal, it's been nerfed. It's not worth the damage you'll take. Just start getting some stone and a house. Go mining (with lots of stairs and torches) if you want. And wait for those crops to grow.
Step 2: A good, concentrated farm
Alright, so your food is growing, but you're not only getting seeds! Well, put the crop in a grid by itself, and it gives you one seed. This is a useful trick to get more of the crops you want.
Next you want to get some cooking gear. If you've gone mining and have iron to spare, you've got several options. The most important one (in my opinion) would be bakeware. It's like a chest, but with brick.
If you're in plains-esque or forest-esque, get eggplant and garlic seeds, and make large farms of them. Eggplant+garlic+bakeware(reuseable) = stuffed eggplant. This is a good source of food. You can explore NEI for other options. If you have wheat and some cotton or string, fish sticks are a decent food source.
That's about all I've got to say on the subject at the moment.
